How to Prepare for Your Maternity Session

Soft, elegant, and stress-free tips for expecting mamas

Pregnancy is a fleeting, magical season—and your maternity session is all about capturing the quiet beauty, the curves, the glow, and the emotion of this time. My goal is to make your experience feel effortless, so your photos feel timeless and natural.

Here’s how to prepare so you can show up feeling confident, relaxed, and radiant.

1. Timing Matters

The best time for a maternity session is usually 28–34 weeks.

  • Your belly is beautifully round

  • You still feel comfortable moving and posing

  • You can enjoy the session without too much fatigue

If you’re expecting multiples or have a high-risk pregnancy, we can adjust timing to what feels safest for you.

2. Outfits That Flow

What you wear helps tell your story. For my sessions, I love soft, flowing dresses, or simple fabrics that highlight your bump.

Tips for styling:

  • Stick to neutral or soft pastel tones—think whites, creams, blush, or soft grays

  • Bring a fitted option to show off your curves

  • Draped fabrics or subtle sheer layers can create ethereal, timeless photos

  • Coordinate with your partner or kids without matching exactly

I also encourage choosing pieces that feel like you—comfortable, elegant, and true to your style.

3. Hair & Makeup

Soft and natural is always best. You don’t need a full glam session—just a look that enhances your natural glow.

  • Soft curls, loose waves, or a simple updo

  • Natural, glowing makeup

  • Minimal contouring or dramatic colors

Professional hair & makeup is an option if you want that extra polished look, but it’s not required.

4. Take Care of Yourself

Little details make a big difference on camera:

  • Moisturize your belly and skin

  • Get some rest the night before

  • Drink water to keep your skin dewy

  • Wear loose clothing right before the session to avoid marks

5. The Mood & Style

Before your session, think about the feeling you want to capture:

  • Light, airy, and minimal

  • Soft, intimate, and moody

  • Natural outdoor moments (parks, gardens, golden hour)

  • Fine-art studio portraits

I’ll guide the posing and angles so it all feels effortless and authentic.

6. Include Loved Ones (Optional)

Your maternity session can be solo—or include the people who make this moment special:

  • Your partner for connection and emotion

  • Siblings for playful, candid moments

  • Pets if they’re part of your family

7. Don’t Stress About Posing

You don’t need to know poses. I’ll guide you every step of the way. The best images come from natural, unplanned moments—soft touches, gentle laughter, quiet connection.

8. Bring Essentials

A small bag can make the session more comfortable:

  • Water & snacks

  • Comfortable shoes (especially for outdoor sessions)

  • Light cover-ups for between shots

  • Touch-up makeup if needed

9. Relax & Enjoy

This is your moment to celebrate your body, your growing baby, and the love that surrounds you. The photos are just a bonus—the experience itself is part of the memory.

Your maternity session is about you—your glow, your story, your magic.
Show up as you are. Relax. Let the love shine. I’ll capture it all.
